Does AI actually work in Indian languages?
Yes, much better than two years ago. Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, and Kannada are all production-ready for most everyday tasks.
Multilingual AI in India has crossed an important line. The major frontier models — Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini — can now hold a meaningful conversation in most major Indian languages and switch between English and a local language mid-thread.
What works well: writing, summarising, translating between Indian languages, and explaining concepts in a chosen language at a chosen reading level. A teacher can ask a model to explain photosynthesis in Marathi for a sixth grader and get a clean answer.
What is still rough: deep cultural and contextual nuance, especially humour and idiom. The models will produce grammatically correct text that does not quite land. For brand and marketing work, treat the AI output as a first draft and have a native speaker polish.
Where it shines: voice. AI voice models now produce convincing Indian-English and Hindi voiceovers, with growing quality in regional languages. Dubbing English content into multiple Indian languages is a real workflow today, not a research demo.
